SoDak: Ranks fifth for voter turnout
Yahoo news currently has an interesting article ranking South Dakota as the fifth highest state in voter turnout. There’s some interesting analysis about why we do so well with voter turnout.
“South Dakota is part of the collection of Upper Midwest states where a strong sense of community, civic duty, and civility in political discussion are abundant,” Bryan Dettrey, an assistant professor at the University of South Dakota, writes in an e-mail. “These cultural factors contribute to higher levels of turnout.”
South Dakota’s average turnout is 60.13, Yahoo says, which is 8.5 percentage points above the national average.
The state is one of three in the Upper Midwest among the top six. Minnesota is number one in the country.
