Bishop on Medicaid: There’s no bill

At the Capitol today, some religious leaders testified that the state should accept the expanded Medicaid option in the Affordable Care Act to cover adults up to 133 percent of the federal poverty limit.

Bishop Paul Swain of the Sioux Falls diocese was not among them. Catholics favor universal health care, and Medicaid expansion is a step in that direction.

I left a message for Bishop Swain with his secretary. Jerry Klein, Swain’s spokesman, called me back this afternoon. Swain, Klein said, is not specifically backing this effort because there isn’t a bill that could be analyzed.

Klein also sent me the statement below, and said: “I think the issue is there is no specific bill. His statement is more generic because there isn’t a specific bill.”
