The Argus Leader’s lawsuit against the United States Department of Agriculture over food stamps got some good news today. The Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals agreed to hear oral arguments on our appeal of a district judge’s decision to throw out the lawsuit.
The Argus Leader filed suit in 2011 to force the federal government into handing over five years of the amounts each business has earned by participating in the program. The paper contends that those payments, made with your tax dollars, area a matter of public record.
The USDA, however, believes the public has no business in knowing which companies are profiting from the program.
