South Dakota Dem Chairman Ben Nesselhuf is stepping down to manage the campaign of Jim Mowrer, an Army veteran who is challenging Rep. Steve King in Iowa.
Nesselhuf said the opportunity came in the last few weeks while discussing candidate recruitment with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. He learned that Mowrer had a team assembled, but no manager.
Mowrer, he said, is a candidate out of “central casting.” He’s an Army veteran who served in Iraq, and he’s a native of the district. The decision also enables him to stay with his wife, where she lives in Sioux City. It means no more grueling drives from Vermillion to Sioux Falls, where the Democrats have their office.
"It’s a difficult professional decision, but it was kind of a no-brainer at the end of the day."
So who steps up now for the SoDak Dems? Deb Knecht will serve as interim chair. Zach Crago will be the interim executive director. Nesselhuf had served as both chair and ED.
